At least three people were killed and several injured overnight in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Russian officials have said.
A woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, and a person was trapped under rubble, regional governor Andrei Vorobiev reported. Two individuals were killed in the village of Pogorelki.
Additionally, a male Indian citizen was reported dead, with three others injured, although it remains unclear if these casualties were included in the initial death toll. Another fatality was reported in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the strikes were an entirely justified response to deadly Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Russian state media described the strikes as the largest on Moscow in over a year. This follows a devastating Russian drone and missile attack earlier in the week that left 24 people dead in Kyiv.
In Ukraine, eight people were reported injured due to overnight Russian drone attacks and shelling in the central Dnipropetrovsk region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has seen Moscow control about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
The drone attack commenced early Sunday morning, with Vorobiev noting that air defense forces managed to repel the assault. Reports indicated that four people, including three men and a woman, were injured, alongside extensive property damage.

In a recent Telegram post, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine's long-range sanctions had indeed reached the Moscow region, demanding that the Russian state end its ongoing war.
Ukraine's military, in cooperation with its intelligence service, claimed responsibility for the drone strikes which targeted various oil facilities and a semiconductor plant in the Moscow region. Reports indicated that several air defense systems were also hit in Crimea.
This week, Ukrainian forces have stepped up their attacks against key energy infrastructure in Russia, arguing that such facilities are legitimate targets that support the Russian war effort.
