A federal agent involved in a controversial shooting in Minneapolis, which resulted in the death of 37-year-old Renee Good, has been identified as Jonathan Ross, an Iraq War veteran with nearly two decades of service in law enforcement. Internal records reveal that Ross has been a deportation officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since 2015, previously serving in the Border Patrol.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday when Good attempted to flee federal agents. While authorities have refrained from naming the shooter, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem disclosed that Ross was involved in an earlier incident last June where he sustained serious injuries.
Amid evidence suggesting that Good was trying to escape, questions have arisen regarding whether the shooting was justified. The FBI has commenced a probe into the incident, which has sparked protests calling for criminal charges against Ross.
Background on Jonathan Ross
In his testimony last month, Jonathan Ross detailed his military service in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and his transition into law enforcement after returning. He joined the Border Patrol in 2007 and later ICE, focusing on fugitive operations and intelligence analysis related to criminal networks.
Ross’ previous experience includes leadership roles and involvement with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Notably, he has completed firearms and active shooter instructor training, showcasing his extensive tactical background.
Last June, Ross was seriously injured while attempting to apprehend another suspect related to illegal immigration. The altercation involved physical confrontation, resulting in him being dragged by a vehicle while trying to employ a taser against the fleeing suspect.
Defense and Ongoing Investigation
Federal officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, have praised Ross for his service and defended his actions during the recent shooting, stating that he acted in accordance with his training. However, concerns persist over the circumstances surrounding the shooting, with multiple media outlets and activists highlighting the need for transparency and accountability.
As the FBI investigates this incident, public discourse continues regarding the use of lethal force by law enforcement officers.
