Former President Peter Mutharika has been declared the winner of last week's elections, marking an incredible comeback for the 85-year-old politician.

Mutharika secured 57% of the votes compared to 33% for President Lazarus Chakwera, who conceded defeat ahead of the final results and congratulated Mutharika on his historic win.

With a legal background as a former professor of law, Mutharika previously served from 2014 to 2020, when he lost to Chakwera. The election commission took the full eight days to announce the results to ensure a thorough review amidst complaints, particularly given the contentious nature of past elections.

Facing a significant economic crisis, Mutharika will have to tackle severe inflation, which is currently close to 30%. The cost of basic goods has soared, and the nation's economy is struggling with fuel and currency shortages. His campaign focused on a return to proven leadership, resonating with voters amid growing dissatisfaction with Chakwera's administration.

The results have led to victory celebrations among Mutharika's supporters, characterized by music and dancing despite the serious challenges ahead. As Mutharika prepares to reclaim the presidency, speculation regarding his health and ability to lead at 85 remains a concern. His inauguration is to take place within 30 days, setting the stage for what promises to be a critical term for Malawi.
