WASHINGTON (AP) — An AP-NORC poll has revealed a troubling trend for President Donald Trump, with substantial drops in approval ratings on pivotal issues such as the economy and immigration. These declines could pose significant challenges as the Republican party gears up for the 2026 midterm elections. Only 31% of U.S. adults currently approve of Trump's economic policies, a noticeable decline from 40% recorded in March, marking his lowest approval rating on economic matters during his presidency.
The poll highlights a disconcerting trend as Trump's overall approval rating has only slightly dipped to 36%, down from 42% in March. While a majority of Republicans still back him, dissatisfaction has increased, particularly related to his handling of the economy, where approval has fallen from 78% to 69% within his party.
Worsening perceptions about immigration and crime—a space where he previously received favorable ratings—have also significantly changed. Approval regarding his immigration management stands at 38%, down from 49%, while the rating for his handling of crime has decreased from 53% to 43%.
The results illustrate the uphill battle Trump may face as he attempts to retain support not only from Republicans but also from independents, particularly as Americans express increasing concern about the state of the economy, with 68% rating it as 'poor'. As Trump continues to navigate these challenges, the implications are profound for his re-election campaign and the future of the Republican Party.
Going into the midterms, Trump's approval ratings in key areas will undoubtedly be an important factor as candidates align themselves with, or distance themselves from, the president's policies.
