Trump Delays Critical Meeting with Xi Jinping Amid Ongoing Iran War
US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he is planning to delay a high-stakes visit to China, originally scheduled for the end of March, by about a month due to the ongoing Iran war. We've requested that we delay it a month or so, he told reporters at the White House, highlighting the importance of his involvement in overseeing military operations.
The meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was set for March 31 to April 2, following their last face-to-face discussions in October of the previous year. Chinese foreign affairs officials confirmed that discussions are underway between Washington and Beijing regarding the timing of Trump's visit.
Trump has indicated that the revised schedule will allow him to focus on the Iran conflict, which has significantly impacted his administration's foreign policy agenda. Chinese spokesperson Lin Jian stated that claims linking the meeting delay to tensions over the Strait of Hormuz are unfounded.
Despite previously hinting that the meeting's timing could hinge on China's cooperation regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Trump clarified that his primary concern remains the management of the war effort in Iran. I'm looking forward to being with him, Trump said of Xi, expressing confidence in their diplomatic relationship.
The notion of postponement arises as the conflict in Iran continues to disrupt global oil supplies and fuel growing animosities between the two nations. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced that the reasons for the delay are not linked to trade disputes or requests for China's assistance in the Gulf but instead revolve around the urgent need for Trump to coordinate the U.S. military response.
As negotiations between US and Chinese officials progress, both sides have shown willingness to continue discussions over various issues, including tariffs, investments, and economic sanctions, while navigating the challenging backdrop of escalating tensions due to the Iran war.
