US President Donald Trump has removed Attorney General Pam Bondi - a longtime ally and fierce defender of his administration - from her post as America’s top law enforcement officer.
Trump praised her in a post on the platform Truth Social, claiming she would be 'transitioning' to a role in the private sector.
Bondi’s time leading the justice department was often overshadowed by its handling of the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and the investigation into the convicted sex offender.
She is the second high-profile official from the Trump administration to be removed recently, following Kristi Noem’s dismissal as homeland security chief in March. Bondi will now be replaced by her former deputy, Todd Blanche.
Blanche has denied allegations that Bondi’s handling of the Epstein files contributed to Trump’s decision to dismiss her. 'As President Trump said today, the attorney general made our country safe again,' he stated.
Bondi expressed her commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to Blanche, adding that the job had been 'the honour' of a lifetime.
However, her tenure was marred by controversy, particularly highlighted by a combative congressional hearing where she faced criticism over her handling of the Epstein case.
President Trump had initially defended Bondi, stating, 'She is a wonderful person and she is doing a good job.' Just hours later, he confirmed her departure on social media.
While Trump lauded Bondi's performance, his reported frustrations were primarily tied to her administration's management of sensitive documents pertaining to Epstein and her overall performance.
Bondi herself called Epstein a 'monster' and assured victims of her regret for the abuse they endured, but many believed she did not engage sufficiently with those affected.
The announcement of her dismissal comes amidst escalating scrutiny of the justice department's decisions regarding various investigations, including high-profile cases against Trump's political adversaries.
Bondi’s removal reflects a shift in Trump’s cabinet, as he continues to reshape his administration heading into a pivotal election season.
