An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis, following a car chase after the individual who was found to be illegally in the U.S. from Venezuela.
The incident unfolded when federal officers pursued the man and he ultimately exited his vehicle, leading to a confrontation with an ICE officer. During this altercation, two bystanders reportedly emerged from a nearby apartment building, allegedly attacking the officer. In response to perceived threats to his safety, the officer discharged his weapon, resulting in the man being taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Minneapolis officials have expressed their condemnation, with Mayor Jacob Frey calling for ICE to withdraw from the city. Amid escalating tensions, the city has seen protests erupt in direct response to the shooting, further aggravated by a prior incident where an ICE officer fatally shot a woman, leading to public outcry over law enforcement tactics.
Officials have emphasized the need for calm and reflection amid the turmoil, as more than 3,000 ICE officers have been deployed in Minnesota recently. Meanwhile, the FBI has initiated a thorough investigation into the shooting incidents, as the community's trust in federal operations continues to deteriorate.
