MINNEAPOLIS (Flux Daily) — Garrison Gibson, a 37-year-old Liberian man, was arrested this past weekend during a significant immigration operation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Minneapolis. Lawyers representing Gibson assert that agents unlawfully entered his home using a battering ram, despite having been compliant with immigration regulations for years and attending regular check-ins with authorities.
According to attorney Marc Prokosch, this incident marks a blatant violation of constitutional rights and raises questions about the legal justification for the heavy-handed tactics employed by immigration agents. He emphasized that the agents operated without a proper warrant, relying solely on an administrative warrant which does not grant them the authority to forcibly enter private residences.
Gibson's arrest occurs in a city already on heightened alert following the tragic shooting of Renee Good, a local resident, by an immigration officer during another enforcement action. This shooting led to protests and increased scrutiny of the government's approach to immigration enforcement.
Prokosch stated, If he’s this dangerous person, then, why are they letting him walk around? pointing to Gibson’s consistent interactions with immigration officers as indicative of his compliance.
DHS officials have characterized Gibson's legal history as lengthy, including a variety of charges, yet evidence indicates a lack of significant felonies against him, aside from a drug conviction that was eventually dismissed. Activists have mobilized in response to his arrest, with many condemning the heavy-handedness of the immigration enforcement operations.
As the community grapples with the implications of such aggressive immigration policies, officials at various levels have expressed concern and are urging residents to come forward with any evidence related to the of shooting of Renee Good.
The situation remains fluid, with protests occurring in response to Gibson's arrest, emphasizing the growing tension between immigration enforcement actions and community safety.
