Three Israelis have lost their lives, and eight others are injured following a harrowing shooting attack blamed on Palestinian assailants in the northern region of the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military, alongside paramedics, reported that those killed included two women in their 60s and a man in his 40s. The attack took place near the village of al-Funduq on Highway 55, where shooters reportedly opened fire at multiple vehicles before fleeing the crime scene.
Emergency responders from the Magen David Adom service described the attack as particularly brutal. Paramedic Avichai Ben Tzurya recounted the grim scene, stating, “We conducted quick searches and identified two females and a male in private cars without a pulse, suffering from severe gunshot wounds. We had no choice but to pronounce them dead at the scene.” The bus driver, who was seriously wounded, was among those evacuated to two hospitals in central Israel, as others sustained injuries resulting from gunfire and shattered glass.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, declaring that the "abhorrent murderers" will face justice. He underscored his commitment to ensure that those responsible “will not get away” as investigations launched by the military continue, with security forces setting up roadblocks to capture the assailants.
While no Palestinian group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Hamas described it as a "heroic response" to Israel's ongoing military actions, particularly referencing the war in Gaza that commenced following Hamas's assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023.
The violent conflict has seen hundreds of casualties on both sides since its escalation, with increasing hostility observed in the region. On Sunday, Israeli forces were reported to have killed two Palestinians during operations in the West Bank, exacerbating an already tense situation.
As violence continues to rage, the international community watches closely, hoping for a successful resolution to the ongoing turmoil in the region.
