YEREVAN, Armenia (FluxDaily) — Vice President JD Vance arrived in Armenia on Monday, a landmark visit as no sitting U.S. vice president or president has visited before. The Trump administration is keen on facilitating a U.S.-brokered agreement that aims to put an end to a decades-long conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan.

Upon arrival, Vance and his wife Usha were warmly welcomed with honors, including a red carpet and an official delegation. While Armenian flags adorned the streets, a handful of protesters, including one holding a sign that asked, Does Trump support Devils? highlighted the contentious atmosphere surrounding U.S. involvement.

In Yerevan, Vance is scheduled to meet with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Pashinyan had signed a crucial agreement in August at the White House aimed at reopening essential transportation links with Azerbaijan. The agreement included initial commitments toward a peace treaty, although it remains pending formal signatures and parliamentary ratifications.

Before his visit to Armenia, Vance spent several days in Milan attending the Winter Olympics with family and is set to continue his journey to Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

Both Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are members of President Donald Trump’s new Board of Peace, tasked with managing a prospective peace agreement for the region. Originally rooted in peace efforts related to Gaza, the board has expanded its mission to include the dynamic of Armenian and Azerbaijani relations.

Trump’s administration envisions the creation of a pivotal transit route dubbed the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, set to connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave, an area currently accessible only through Armenian territory. This controversial land corridor was a significant factor in the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has seen prolonged fighting and shifting control since a brief war in 2020.

The deal aims to stabilize relations in a region once marred by violence and displacement, with the hopes that this diplomatic engagement can bring about enduring coexistence and economic cooperation between the two nations.
