Al Jazeera has condemned the killing of one of its Palestinian journalists in an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip, describing it as a 'deliberate and targeted crime'.
Mohammed Wishah, a correspondent for the Al Jazeera Mubasher channel, and one other person were killed in a drone strike on a vehicle in Gaza City on Wednesday, according to reports from both the Qatar-based network and local health officials.
The Israeli military alleged that Wishah was a 'Hamas terrorist' and said it carried out the strike because he posed a threat to its forces in the area.
Witnesses claimed Wishah was travelling in a vehicle with another Palestinian along the coastal road when the missile struck. Footage from the aftermath showed the vehicle engulfed in flames.
Al Jazeera issued a statement stating that it 'strongly condemns the heinous crime of targeting and killing' its correspondent, characterizing it as a violation of international laws aimed at protecting journalists.
International media outlets—including Al Jazeera and local authorities—have denied the claims that Wishah had affiliations with Hamas. The attack highlights the ongoing risks faced by journalists in conflict zones, with Al Jazeera reaffirming its commitment to seek justice for this and other attacks against its staff.
This incident represents the 11th Al Jazeera journalist killed during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, emphasizing the grave dangers journalists encounter while working in the region. The Committee to Protect Journalists also condemned the attack, underscoring the need for accountability and protections for press workers in conflict areas.
