At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting and a fire at a Mormon church in Michigan, local police say.

Officials reported an active shooter incident at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, located about 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, on Sunday morning.

There are multiple victims and the shooter is down, police stated. They have not yet revealed the identity of the suspect or any potential motive for the attack.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department assured the public that there is no further threat and the fire has been controlled.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed her condolences on X, describing it as a horrific shooting and fire. She confirmed that agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are en route to the scene.

Bondi emphasized that violence in places of worship is both heartbreaking and chilling, urging the community to pray for the victims of this tragedy.

FBI Director Kash Patel labeled the incident as a cowardly and criminal act, confirming federal agents' assistance to local officials.

In a statement, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the violence, stating, Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable, and noted she is closely monitoring the situation.
