Zimbabwe Tycoon Wicknell Chivayo Killed in Helicopter Crash

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife were among six people who died when their helicopter crashed in the Marondera rural area on Wednesday evening.

Police confirmed all six occupants—including two pilots—were killed. The accident took place about 70 kilometres east of Harare as the aircraft was heading from Chikomba to a farming site near Kudenga Farm.

Chivayo, who styled himself “Sir Wicknell,” is known for flaunting wealth on social media, his close ties to several African presidents, and a string of lucrative government contracts, most notably a 172‑million‑pound solar power project in Gwanda. The project had sparked legal disputes and investigations into procurement for Zimbabwe’s contested 2023 elections.

Despite frequent accusations, Chivayo repeatedly denied wrongdoing. He also became famous for handing out luxury cars and large cash gifts to musicians and public figures, using the gestures to bolster his public image.

Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths to state broadcaster ZBC, describing the tragedy as devastating. He had supplied statements to authorities, who are still probing the crash’s cause. International condolences poured in, with Kenya’s President William Ruto calling him a “dear friend” and citing his cross‑regional influence.

Authorities have yet to identify all passengers, but the flight had departed from Gandami in Chikomba, where Chivayo was building a rural home. Emergency services rushed to the scene at 17:00 local time, but there were no survivors.
