Trump Promises Immediate Repairs to The Green Reflecting Pool After Vandalism Allegations
U.S. President Donald Trump declared on 22 June 2026 that the Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. will be "repaired immediately" after an inspection conducted from a helicopter on his way back from Camp David.
Despite a recent multi‑million‑dollar repaint and refurbishment, the pool has become green‑shaded again thanks to a bloom of algae. The water’s vibrant hue and peeling paint are prompting further clean‑up operations. Trump cited vandalism claims, asserting that the paint has been marred by deranged individuals before the 250th anniversary of the nation’s 4 July independence.
U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., Jeanine Pirro, announced on Fox News that anyone caught vandalising the pool would face the criminal justice system. Authorities say five people have been arrested for vandalism and five further citations were issued Saturday night, based on more than 14 police reports.
Early reports indicate that officials are using chemicals—including hydrogen peroxide—to combat the algae. A professor of aquatic ecology, Dr. Rosalina Stancheva Christova, confirmed the presence of the harmless Desmodesmus species. However, the dynamic ecosystem of the pool could still harbour harmful bacteria if new algae strains are introduced by birds.
The Reflecting Pool, originally built in the 1920s and stretching 2,030 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has long been plagued by leaks, faults and maintenance issues. The $13 million restoration did little to stop the algae, but it did produce a fresh coat of blue paint that has since begun to peel away from the bottom of the water feature.
In the current timeline, workers are scheduled to drain the pool again this month to complete the necessary repairs. The federal Park Police have not yet confirmed all arrest figures, but officials expect to enforce stringent penalties as the national holiday approaches.
