WASHINGTON (AP) — A dangerous heat wave is breaking records across the Southwestern U.S., specifically notable for occurring months ahead of typical seasonal patterns. Experts note that this unprecedented climatic occurrence is linked to the ongoing crisis of climate change.
The Southwest, known for its hot weather, faced an alarming 110-degree Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius) reading in an Arizona desert on Thursday, a shocking record for March temperatures in the U.S. Preliminary reports indicated that areas in Arizona and Southern California hit highs of 109 F (about 43 C), further emphasizing the severity of the situation.
According to climate scientist Andrew Weaver from the University of Victoria, This is what climate change looks like in real time: extremes pushing beyond the bounds we once thought possible. These extreme weather patterns are becoming increasingly frequent and are altering the risk landscape for communities nationwide.
A recent report from World Weather Attribution, a coalition of scientists studying extreme weather phenomena, indicates that the March heat wave would have been nearly impossible without human-driven climate change. They linked the record temperatures to human activity, stating that such extremes are being exacerbated by the ongoing warming of our planet.
Notably, the areas afflicted by extreme weather in the U.S. have doubled compared to two decades ago, as indicated by NOAA's Climate Extremes Index. The consequences are stark, with 77% more hot weather records now set compared to the 1970s and devastating financial impacts from billion-dollar weather disasters quadrupling over three decades.
It’s really hard to even keep up with how extreme our extremes are becoming, stated Climate Central Chief Meteorologist Bernadette Woods Placky. Climate change is pushing weather extremes into realms previously considered unimaginable, with rising temperatures affecting urban planning, disaster preparedness, and overall community safety.
