Three California men have been sentenced for an innovative insurance scam involving an individual dressed in a bear suit staging fake attacks on luxury cars.
The fraudulent scheme came to light after a viral video raised suspicions showing what appeared to be a bear interacting with a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost in Lake Arrowhead on January 28, 2024. On the same day, similar claims were filed regarding two luxury Mercedes models.
After reviewing footage, biologists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife determined that the supposed bear was actually a human in a costume. This prompted the state insurance department to initiate 'Operation Bear Claw,' leading to a search warrant at the suspects' residence where the bear suit was found.
The scam had netted $141,839 in fraudulent insurance payments. The defendants, identified as Alfiya Zuckerman, 39, Ruben Tamrazian, 26, and Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32, all pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud, prompting their sentencing to 180 days in jail alongside two years of supervised probation.
State insurance commissioner Ricardo Lara responded to the case stating, 'What may have looked unbelievable turned out to be exactly that - and now those responsible are being held accountable.'
The discovered bear costume and the elaborate nature of the scam have drawn significant public attention, underlining the lengths to which individuals can go to exploit the insurance industry.
