A state prosecutor has subpoenaed the city of Jacksonville as part of an investigation into alleged immigration enforcement interference by Mayor Donna Deegan’s Hispanic outreach coordinator, Yanira Cardona. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier revealed the action in a social media post, emphasizing the need to hold accountable those who might obstruct immigration enforcement.
The subpoena, as obtained by Jacksonville Today, mandates city officials to produce communications, including emails and social media messages related to Cardona's activities from January 2 to 16.
This development comes shortly after Cardona returned to her role at City Hall post-suspension for posting a controversial video regarding interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In her widely-shared clip, she advised on how to navigate such enforcement, suggesting compliance with officers.
The request for records includes extensive documentation regarding communications between city officials and federal immigration agents, alongside protocols about avoiding law enforcement contact.
Melissa Ross, director of strategic initiatives in Deegan’s administration, confirmed Cardona is still employed as the investigation progresses.
The Deegan administration has vocally criticized the inquiry, pinning it as a politically motivated attack rather than an issue of public concern, especially against the backdrop of escalating electoral activities. They express confidence in their lawful conduct amidst mounting scrutiny from the attorney general’s office.
Uthmeier contends any local interference with immigration enforcement contradicts a recent state law designed to facilitate coordination between local and federal immigration efforts, indicating unresolved tensions over the mayor's public engagements on immigration rights, which have sparked backlash.
In response to the allegations, immigrant rights advocates have rallying support for Cardona, framing the state's actions as a politicized attack against those working to support immigrant communities.
This story is part of the evolving landscape around immigration in Florida, highlighting the ongoing political struggles that intersect with community needs and state law enforcement policies.
