SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A judge has decided to keep Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez in custody due to concerns he may flee following a shooting incident involving immigration officers. The dual citizen of El Salvador and Mexico faces assault charges for allegedly driving his car toward an ICE agent before reversing into a law enforcement vehicle during an enforcement stop in central California.
According to Mendoza's lawyer, Patrick Kolasinski, the shooting occurred after Mendoza panicked when agents blocked his car, asserting he had no intent to harm anyone. He disputes claims that Mendoza is a gang member wanted for questioning in a murder case, emphasizing that a Salvadoran court previously acquitted him of murder charges.
Mendoza sustained multiple gunshot wounds and has undergone several surgeries. The Department of Homeland Security has stated that ICE officers fired defensive shots after Mendoza allegedly attempted to drive into them.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence associated with aggressive immigration enforcement policies, especially during the previous administration. As the scrutiny of federal immigration tactics continues, questions arise about the legitimacy of official narratives surrounding such shooting incidents.
Mendoza's next court appearance is set for early May, as the legal battle evolves in the context of broader criticism of immigration enforcement methods.
