ATLANTA (AP) — A man who served in the U.S. Navy after immigrating from Britain has been charged in a series of deadly attacks in the Atlanta suburbs that quickly drew national attention.
U.K.-native Olaolukitan Adon Abel, who is accused of killing two women, including a Department of Homeland Security employee, and critically injuring another man, has a criminal history that raises questions about how he was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned the shootings as acts of pure evil while expressing concern about the background of Abel.
Three Early Morning Attacks
The violent attacks took place early Monday across Decatur, Brookhaven, and Panthersville. The first reported incident left 31-year-old Prianna Weathers dead from gunshot wounds near a restaurant. Shortly after, a homeless man was shot while sleeping outside a grocery store, suffering critical injuries. The final victim, Lauren Bullis, a DHS employee, was found with stab and gunshot wounds during a routine dog walk.
All three incidents have been determined as connected by local investigators, indicating a disturbing pattern of violence. Eyewitness accounts suggest that at least one victim was targeted randomly.
Remembering Lauren Bullis
More than a mile away from where she was found, Bullis, 40, was remembered as a generous and caring individual by those who worked with her at the DHS. Her family highlighted her passion for running and traveling, stating that her kindness touched the lives of many.
Suspect's Troubled Past
Adon Abel joined the Navy in 2020 and has a prior history of violent behavior, including a guilty plea in California last year for assaults on police officers and other individuals while stationed there. Recent charges against him include malice murder and aggravated assault.
Health and safety officials are investigating how Abel's criminal record affected his path to citizenship, a topic of significant scrutiny when related to public safety.
