MIAMI (AP) — President Donald Trump shared a video of a deadly attack allegedly by a Haitian immigrant accused of bludgeoning a woman with a hammer at a Florida gas station, portraying the killing as justification for his administration’s mass deportation agenda.
Rolbert Joachin, 40, was arrested and charged with killing a woman on April 2 in Fort Myers, about 160 miles northwest of Miami. Authorities said the man was from Haiti and arrived in the U.S. in 2022. The woman who was killed was identified as a 51-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh and a mother of two adult daughters.
Trump's use of the video is not an isolated incident; he frequently attempts to associate immigrant populations with increased crime rates. The disturbing footage of the attack presented him with a particularly visceral opportunity to push his narrative that crime in the U.S. is closely linked to immigration. In his post, Trump referred to the attacker as an “animal,” amplifying the intended shock value of the video.
Critics contend that Trump oversimplifies complex issues surrounding immigration and crime, arguing that immigrants are less likely to engage in violent crime compared to native-born Americans. They emphasize the risk of stereotypes that can lead to harmful policies affecting millions.
"Our hearts are with the family of the victim during this unimaginably painful time," stated Guerline Jozef, executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, condemning the violent act while emphasizing that it should not define an entire community. She criticized the exploitation of the tragedy to demonize Haitian immigrants, calling it unjust and harmful.

The woman who lost her life, identified as Nilufa Easmin, was working at the gas station's convenience store when the attack happened. According to court reports, the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident. In footage released by the Department of Homeland Security, the man can be seen attacking the victim with a hammer, leading to national outrage and calls for justice.
The victim's GoFundMe, set up by community members, speaks to her character as a devoted mother who worked multiple jobs to support her children.
The Trump administration has been vocal about its disapproval of policies that provide temporary protections to immigrants, often claiming such measures enable dangerous individuals to remain in the country. This incident has reignited discussions around continuously tightening immigration controls.
As the case develops, many are calling for a more nuanced approach to immigration that considers individual actions over blanket statements about entire communities.
