Brazil’s 2026 presidential race has turned into a battleground for accusations of foreign interference.

Incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has publicly accused Washington of using its influence to support his right‑wing rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula’s criticism centers on long‑standing U.S. ties to Bolsonaro’s family, as well as trade arrangements that he says give foreign actors leverage over Brazilian politics.

He warns that such pressure could undermine Brazil’s sovereignty and destabilise the country’s ongoing operations against organised crime.

Experts note that the dispute reflects a broader pattern of democratic backsliding and the complex interplay between domestic politics and international power dynamics in the 21st century.
