Russian-Intimidated Journalist Evan Gershkovich Shares Detainment Experience

In a candid interview on the BBC’s Today programme, American reporter Evan Gershkovich recalled how he spent a year and a half behind bars in Russia, after being arrested at a restaurant in March 2023 amid allegations of espionage.

Gershkovich described the event as a ‘trap’. He said masked men surrounded him, took him to an undisclosed location and handed him over to authorities. He would later be sentenced to 16 years in a maximum‑security prison, a verdict he and his employer say was entirely fabricated.

The Russian indictment was dropped just before the 2024 prisoner exchange that saw Gershkovich freed and flown back to the United States. President Joe Biden’s administration publicly declared the journalist a national priority, echoing his own insistence that no other matter could outrank his safe return.
