Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has reported a very constructive phone call with Donald Trump's peace envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the US president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Zelensky stated they discussed strategies to ensure Russia adheres to any potential peace deals aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, expressing determination to maintain cooperation with the United States.
Ukrainian officials participated in the call from Miami, where discussions focused on US-led efforts to broker peace with Russia amid the war's escalating violence. Notably, while Ukraine seeks progress on diplomatic fronts, Russian forces continue their aggressive bombardment of Ukrainian cities.
Ukraine is determined to keep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace, Zelensky emphasized on social media. He described the conversation as addressing numerous critical issues necessary for curtailing the bloodshed and mitigating the threat of a renewed full-scale Russian invasion.
The situation remains precarious, with Russia persisting in its air and missile strikes, which have drawn condemnation from Ukraine's allies, including a statement of solidarity from French President Emmanuel Macron, who also signaled his commitment to collaborative efforts for de-escalation.
Macron, along with Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is set to meet in London to discuss ongoing negotiations aimed at ensuring Ukraine's security post-war. The coalition has previously debated the establishment of a European peacekeeping force to be deployed in Ukraine if a ceasefire is achieved, although Russia has firmly rejected such proposals.
Recent assaults from Russia included drone and missile strikes targeting critical infrastructure and energy facilities, compounding the urgency for substantial progress in peace negotiations. As discussions enter their third day in Florida, negotiators continue to advocate for a serious commitment to peace from the Russian side.
