There are no plans for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin in the immediate future, a White House official has stated.
Last Thursday, Trump mentioned that he and the Russian president were scheduled to hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine.
A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was expected to take place this week - however, the White House indicated that the two had already had a productive phone call, and thus, the meeting was no longer deemed necessary.
The White House has not elaborated on the reasons for postponing the planned discussions.
On Monday, Trump expressed support for the idea of freezing the conflict in Ukraine along the current front lines, saying, Let it be cut the way it is, referring explicitly to the Donbas region.
Conversely, Russia has been resistant to this approach, with Lavrov stating that Moscow seeks a long-term, sustainable peace, implying that a freeze would merely lead to a temporary ceasefire.
