The fire broke out just before 10:00 GMT on Wednesday 1 July 2026, according to police. Residents were forced to barricade themselves in their flats and wait on balconies; a dramatic video captured one man clambering from his balcony through a neighbour’s window to escape the smoke.

Firefighters arrived promptly and worked from flat to flat, searching for trapped occupants. The smoke’s rapid spread made visibility extremely poor and complicated the rescue effort. The Antwerp fire brigade spokeswoman, Marie de Clercq, described the scene as a "complex fire" where the smoke hampered firefighting.

Several victims’ bodies, including that of Bob Cools—former mayor of Antwerp—were found in the building. Despite the quick evacuation of some, many residents suffered injuries and are receiving medical care. A man interviewed by Belgian TV said his parents‑in‑law were evacuated and taken to hospital, with the fire brigade arriving to rescue them about ten minutes after the incident.

Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the blaze, though witnesses mentioned that work was underway on the roof at the time of the incident. Police are investigating potential fire hazards linked to recent construction.
