ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Director and Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield turned himself to authorities on Tuesday to face child sex abuse charges in New Mexico.
His apprehension follows the issuance of an arrest warrant for Busfield on January 9, on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. These charges come amid allegations that Busfield inappropriately touched a young boy on the set of the TV series “The Cleaning Lady,” which he directed.
Booked by Albuquerque police, Busfield is facing serious consequences as outlined in a criminal complaint. It reveals that the boy, who was reportedly only seven years old at the time, said Busfield touched him multiple times on private areas over his clothing. Additionally, allegations surfaced that Busfield touched the boy again at the age of eight.
In account of the alleged abuse, the young boy expressed fear of speaking up, worried that Busfield would react negatively due to his role as the director.
Reports from the boy's twin brother corroborate the claims, stating he also experienced inappropriate contact but chose not to disclose it for fear of punishment.
The allegations prompted Busfield to deny the accusations in a previous interview with investigative authorities. He claimed the allegations could stem from the boys’ mother seeking revenge after her children were replaced on the show. He also indicated that his behavior on set might have been playful, including interactions such as tickling.
Busfield’s attorney and agent have yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.
The investigation into these serious allegations began in November 2024, initiated by a doctor’s report suggesting the boys had been affected psychologically, with one reportedly diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following his experiences with Busfield.
Busfield is noted for his roles in various television and film projects, including “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” for which he received an Emmy award in 1991. His recent showcase, “The Cleaning Lady,” aired for four seasons on Fox before concluding in 2025.
