RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Firefighting crews are making substantial progress on Saturday in their battle against a fast-growing wildfire that broke out early Friday morning in Southern California. The Springs Fire, which is located east of Moreno Valley in Riverside County, has now engulfed approximately 6.3 square miles of land and is reported to be 45% contained, an increase from 25% the previous day.
Due to the wildfire's proximity, mandatory evacuation orders and warnings have been issued in over a dozen zones within the county, while the situation remains uncertain for many households affected by these orders. Fortunately, some evacuation zones have been lifted.
Firefighters are facing challenging conditions due to strong winds, with advisories from the National Weather Service indicating wind speeds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Additionally, an air quality alert has been issued because of hazardous smoke emissions from the wildfire, which is expected to affect the surrounding areas.
More than hundreds of personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts, utilizing helicopters, engines, and water tenders to combat the flame's advance. The location of the fire is in a recreational area near Moreno Valley, a city with a population of around 200,000, situated approximately 10 miles southeast of Riverside and about 64 miles east of Los Angeles.
