MINNEAPOLIS (FluxDaily) — A shooting incident involving federal agents was reported in Minneapolis on Wednesday, coinciding with a major immigration enforcement operation that has sparked protests across the city.
Live footage showcased a heavy presence of law enforcement officials secured by yellow police tape, surrounding crashed vehicles at the scene.
“We are aware of a shooting involving federal law enforcement near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. Please avoid this area,” the official city account tweeted.
Bystanders voiced their disapproval loudly, chanting slogans and demanding the agents leave, reminiscent of previous immigration crackdowns in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.
“Shame! Shame! Shame!” they chanted with fervor.
Following the incident, Mayor Jacob Frey sharply criticized the federal actions, declaring that immigration agents are creating chaos in the city. “We demand ICE leave the city and state immediately. We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities,” he stated.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed it had launched an unprecedented immigration enforcement initiative, involving 2,000 agents in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas, purportedly in response to allegations of fraud among Somali residents.
Additionally, the Immigration Defense Network, along with other immigrant services, organized training for community members interested in monitoring enforcement activities, emphasizing solidarity and support for affected individuals.
As the situation develops, public sentiment remains divided, reflecting broader issues of immigration policy and enforcement in the U.S.
