WASHINGTON (Flux Daily) — A 29-year-old man identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal has been charged with various federal firearms violations following a shooting incident that took place near the White House on November 26. The attack resulted in the death of a 20-year-old National Guard member and severe injuries to another.

Lakanwal, who is currently facing several serious charges, including first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm, is accused of ambushing two members of the West Virginia National Guard—Sarah Beckstrom, who was tragically killed, and Andrew Wolfe, who survived the attack.

According to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, the transition of this case from Superior Court to District Court is crucial to determine whether the death penalty will be pursued for Lakanwal. Beckstrom's family now faces a holiday season without their daughter due to the violent act. Wolfe, who is recovering from his injuries, has a long journey ahead.

The shooting incident occurred as Beckstrom and Wolfe were deployed in Washington for President Trump's law enforcement surge in response to ongoing civil unrest. Reports suggest Lakanwal traveled from Bellingham, Washington, armed with a stolen firearm to target the two soldiers.

Notably, Lakanwal, an Afghan national, had previously worked with the American government during operations in Afghanistan, specifically through the U.S. CIA's partnered initiatives. He entered the United States in 2021 under the Operation Allies Welcome program, which aimed to resettle Afghan allies after the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Despite the severity of the charges, there is no provision for the death penalty within D.C. Superior Court. Lakanwal has pled not guilty to the charges and is awaiting further legal proceedings.
