Rapper Balendra Shah Sworn in as Prime Minister of Nepal
Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician, has taken office as Nepal's prime minister after a landslide victory in the country's first election since last year's youth-led protests.
The 35-year-old's rise marks an important shift in Nepali politics. His promise of change resonated with an electorate that was angry at corruption, nepotism, and elite rule.
Before taking office, Shah, popularly known as Balen, released an optimistic song about Nepal's future, resonating with many. His previous work in music highlighted social issues, invoking a sense of unity and hope among the youth.
Having previously served as the mayor of Kathmandu, Shah's political journey has been marked by his efforts to tackle corruption and deliver real change to the city's governance. His supporters view him as a significant break from Nepal's old guard.
However, his tenure is not without controversy. As mayor, he faced criticisms for his tough stance against unlicensed vendors, which drew the ire of human rights groups. Now as prime minister, he must uphold his promises amidst high expectations and significant challenges.
The path ahead will require tackling the country's chronic unemployment, economic stagnation, and addressing the rulings of various investigations concerning prior governance failures.
