Cape Verde fans celebrate historic World Cup draw against Spain
Praia’s streets shook to the roar of vuvuzelas, chanting and car horns as the Blue Sharks held Spanish heroes to a tight 0-0. Though points were shared, many Cape Verdeans felt it was a trophy‑like moment.
“It was an emotional moment,” said Isa Conceição, a supporter in the packed fan zone wearing a blue jersey to display national pride.
The small island nation, home to about half a million people, erupted in wild celebrations after the match ended. Flags were hoisted on balconies, rooftops, and cars, and a national anthem played through “nos óra dja txiga,” meaning “our time has come.”
Widely seen as a win, the draw boosted hopes that Cape Verde might progress beyond the group stage. They will face Uruguay and Saudi Arabia next, with their fate still on the line.
Despite the possibility of early exit, fans remain proud of the team’s effort and expect their image to rise worldwide.
