The family of Liam Conejo Ramos, who became a symbol of the crisis surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States, faces deportation after an immigration judge rejected their asylum claim.

Liam, who is just five years old, was apprehended alongside his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, in a Minneapolis suburb and held for ten days in a Texas detention center during a substantial immigration crackdown that drew national attention earlier this year.

According to the family’s attorney, Judge John Burns ordered their deportation back to Ecuador. We’re just gravely disappointed in the judge’s misguided decision, stated Danielle Molliver, highlighting the family's resolve to pursue an appeal against the ruling.

While an appeal can extend over years, Molliver remained hopeful for a quicker resolution. At minimum, I would hope we have a couple months, she added.

Currently adjusted back at his suburban school, Liam is reportedly shaken by the experiences in detention. The public outcry surrounding his case has intensified amidst allegations that immigration officers utilized him as a "bait" to lure his mother outside, a claim vigorously denied by the Department of Homeland Security.

The father, according to government statements, allegedly entered the U.S. illegally in December 2024. However, his family contests this, insisting he sought asylum legally and should be allowed to remain in the country.

The community has seen an influx of protests against the aggressive strategies employed by federal immigration officials, with escalating tensions resulting in tragic incidents, including the deaths of two American citizens amidst law enforcement actions.
