Four astronauts are about to become the most closely watched crew since Apollo, embarking on the Artemis II mission, which marks the first human orbit of the Moon in over 50 years.
They include three NASA astronauts—Commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch—alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Each brings not only their remarkable skills as pilots, engineers, and scientists but also personal treasures that symbolize their responsibilities and connections at home.
Reid Wiseman, a U.S. Navy test pilot and veteran of previous missions, plans to take a small notepad to jot his thoughts amidst the historical moment. His personal life, impacted significantly by the loss of his wife, reflects on the joys and burdens he carries as a single parent of two girls.
Christina Koch, an engineer recognized for her groundbreaking achievements, including the longest spaceflight by a woman, will carry handwritten notes from loved ones, providing a "tactile connection" to Earth. Recognized as the first woman to travel to the Moon, her journey represents not just personal achievement but a leap for women in STEM.
Jeremy Hansen, the first non-American to potentially orbit the Moon, will bring moonscape pendants for his wife and children, symbolizing his family’s support. He recalls how the Apollo missions inspired his own childhood dreams and sees his mission as a step toward international collaboration in space.
Pilot Victor Glover, who has previously made history as the first black individual aboard the ISS, plans to carry family heirlooms and a Bible, intertwining personal faith with the momentous journey.
As they prepare for launch, these astronauts embody the spirit of exploration, blending personal aspirations with a grand mission for all humanity, ready to showcase their adventure across the stars!
