Ukrainian Spy Detained in Connection with Deadly Car Bombing of Russian General
FSB arrests a suspect accused of orchestrating the assassination of Gen Yaroslav Moskalik in Moscow.
Russian security officials have announced the arrest of a suspect linked to a car bomb attack that resulted in the death of a senior military officer. The FSB secret service reported that the detained individual, identified as Ignat Kuzi, is accused of being a Ukrainian spy responsible for the assassination of Gen Yaroslav Moskalik. The attack occurred in the Balashikha suburb of Moscow on Friday when General Moskalik, who had significant involvement in military operations, was fatally injured by an explosive device concealed in a parked Volkswagen Golf.
According to the FSB, the explosive was set off remotely from Ukrainian territory. The agency claims that Kuzi had been recruited by Ukrainian intelligence earlier in 2023 and had infiltrated Moscow after traveling from Ukraine in September. Russian media has circulated video footage allegedly showing Kuzi confessing to his role in the operation, along with images of the bomb's construction.
In the wake of the attack, the Kremlin has accused Ukraine of continuing to engage in "terrorist activities" against Russia, further escalating tensions between the two nations. Gen Moskalik previously represented Russia during crucial negotiations in Paris back in 2015, which ultimately fell short of resolving the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region. This bombing follows a series of conflicts and hostilities that intensified after Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
