Russia Declares Total Control Over Kursk Amidst Ongoing Tensions
In a video conference with President Putin, Russian military leadership claims full control of Kursk; Ukraine disputes this assertion.
In a significant update from the conflict in Ukraine, Russian military Chief Valery Gerasimov announced during a video meeting with President Vladimir Putin that Russian forces have reclaimed full control of the Kursk region, eight months post-Ukraine's initial incursion into the area. This assertion has been met with strong rebuttal from Ukraine, which insists that its operations continue within the border region. While Gerasimov praised the "heroism" of North Korean troops aiding Russian efforts, Putin characterized Ukraine's military attempts as a complete failure.
Despite these claims, Ukrainian military officials assert they are still conducting operations in the Kursk area, while referring to Russia's announcements as "propaganda tricks." The situation has intensified as Ukraine faces approximately 70,000 Russian troops in the region, battling not only ground forces but also heavy drone assaults. The Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, begun last August, aimed to create a buffer zone to prevent Russian deployments toward the eastern frontlines.
The announcement follows a statement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who indicated that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were making progress toward a potential peace deal. Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff had recent discussions with Putin, and shortly afterward, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of Pope Francis's funeral, emphasizing the need for a complete ceasefire.
Kyiv is reportedly under pressure from Trump to consider territorial concessions in any peace agreement with Moscow, which may include negotiating the status of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014. Ukraine initially aimed to leverage its territorial claims in Kursk as a bargaining chip in possible future negotiations. Currently, Russia asserts that its forces are positioned at the border with Ukraine’s Sumy region, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict.
