In brief

Farmers in the Gaza Strip, once vibrant cultivators of vegetables, now confront desolation as war has obliterated their lands, equipment, and lives over the past year.

After over twelve months of relentless conflict, the agricultural landscape of Gaza has been decimated, leaving farmers to mourn the extensive losses incurred. Once cultivated with crops such as eggplants and tomatoes, these lands have suffered devastation from military actions and troop movements, rendering them unrecognizable. In Beit Lahia, a region that thrived with agricultural collaboration, Yousef Saqer, a young farmer, recalls the beauty of his green fields. “We once worked together to grow food,” he lamented, standing amidst the wreckage where his greenhouses used to flourish. The recent surge in military offensives, aimed at targeting Hamas, has further exacerbated the destruction of his livelihood.“Now, the remnants of what we had are gone; the tanks have ravaged everything,” Saqer explained, reflecting on the drastic shift from modern farming practices to primitive methods of cultivation. He continued, “We’ve been forced to return to using hoes, forks, and shovels as the machinery we relied on is no more.”This testament highlights the ongoing plight of Gazan farmers caught in a cycle of violence and loss, raising urgent concerns about food security and the future of agriculture in the region.
