Ukrainian President Zelensky to Make Historic Visit to Ireland
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin in Dublin on Tuesday, marking a historic moment as it will be the first official visit to Ireland by a Ukrainian president and first lady.
President Zelensky will also have a courtesy meeting with newly-inaugurated Irish President Catherine Connolly and is set to attend the inauguration of the Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum, alongside the Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) Simon Harris and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee.
Visit at a Critical Time
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, over 120,000 Ukrainian refugees have sought refuge in Ireland, with about 80,000 estimated to still be living there. The Irish government sees this visit as an opportunity to strengthen the already close ties between Ireland and Ukraine, emphasizing Ireland’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia's aggressive actions.
A Critical Time for Ukraine and Europe
Taoiseach Martin acknowledged the bravery of the Ukrainian people in their fight against invasion and expressed intentions to discuss how Ireland can further support Ukraine’s efforts towards achieving a just and lasting peace. The visit comes at a significant juncture for both Ukraine and Europe, as diplomatic negotiations continue amid ongoing conflict.
