MINNEAPOLIS (FLUXDAILY) — President Donald Trump's recent remarks regarding Somalia and its immigrants have stirred significant outrage within Minnesota's largest Somali community. Trump stated during a Cabinet meeting that Somalis 'contribute nothing' and should leave the country, which led to a wave of condemnation from local leaders and community members.
Hamse Warfe, a Somali-born U.S. citizen and successful entrepreneur in Minneapolis, responded to Trump's comments by affirming the contributions of Somali Americans. 'I am not garbage,' he asserted, emphasizing the importance of respectful dialogue from figures in power.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul area houses approximately 84,000 Somali residents, accounting for nearly one-third of the Somali population in the U.S. Many have migrated to Minnesota since the 1990s, attracted by the state's supportive services and growing community.
Local political figures, including Rep. Ilhan Omar—a frequent target of Trump's rhetoric—have been vocal in advocating for the community's dignity. Following Trump's comments, community leaders vowed to protect the Somali residents of Minneapolis, reiterating their longstanding contributions to both the economy and social fabric of the state.
In light of these developments, there are reports that federal authorities are preparing targeted immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota likely aimed at undocumented immigrants from Somalia, further raising tensions within the community. As this situation unfolds, leaders are ramping up efforts to combat discrimination and protect the rights of Somali Americans.
'Minneapolis is — and will remain — a city that stands up for our residents,' Mayor Jacob Frey declared, affirming the city’s commitment to inclusivity and support for its diverse communities.
