(Barcelona) - A tragic train derailment occurred near Barcelona on Tuesday evening, resulting in the death of the train driver and injuries to at least 14 passengers, according to local media reports.
The Rodalies commuter train collided with a retaining wall which had previously collapsed onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní. Emergency services, consisting of eleven ambulances and 35 fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to manage the situation and assist those hurt.
As emergency responders work to assess the severity of injuries, they have evacuated several affected individuals to nearby hospitals, including Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca.
This unfortunate incident took place during heavy storms hitting the northeastern region of Spain, which also prompted weather alerts across many coastal areas. Additionally, snowstorms experienced in the Pyrenees and significant waves along the Menorca coast have contributed to heightened concerns in the region.
This derailment occurs just two days after another tragic railway incident in Adamuz, Andalusia, where a collision between two high-speed trains resulted in at least 42 fatalities, marking one of Spain's most severe train disasters in years.
