Shark Attack at Coogee Beach Leaves Woman Seriously Injured
On Saturday morning, a 35‑year‑old woman was bitten by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after her arm and leg were severely injured.
She was rescued from the water by bystanders who provided first aid before emergency services were called. The woman was then air‑lifted to a hospital by helicopter, where she is receiving treatment for serious arm and leg injuries.
Police closed several nearby beaches as a precaution while authorities searched for the shark.
Eyewitness “Nicola Logan” described a “massive pool of blood” in the water and the frantic efforts of a paddleboarder to pull the victim in.
This incident follows last week’s fatal shark attack on a male diver off the coast of Perth, and a recent kill of a father‑of‑two near the same area.
Since 1791, Australia has recorded nearly 1,300 shark attacks, with more than 260 fatalities, making shark encounters more common there than elsewhere.
Popular surfing and swimming beaches in Australia generally have shark‑defence measures in place.
