A young boy who was bitten by a shark in Sydney Harbour last week has died in hospital.
Twelve-year-old Nico Antic had been jumping off a rock ledge with friends on 18 January when he was attacked by what authorities suspected was a bull shark.
We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico has passed away, his parents Lorena and Juan said in a statement.
The incident was one of four reported shark attacks along the New South Wales coast over two days.
Nico was described as a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with a kind spirit. His family, who originally hail from Argentina, remembered him fondly: He was always full of life and that’s how we’ll remember him.
His friends displayed remarkable bravery, jumping into the water to assist him after the incident.
Despite being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a critical condition and placed in an induced coma following surgery, he succumbed to his injuries.
The alarming frequency of shark attacks in the region has raised public safety concerns. Following heavy rainfall, conditions became favorable for bull sharks, leading to an uptick in such incidents. Beaches were closed temporarily to protect swimmers, with many now reopened for the upcoming holiday weekend.
An online fundraiser set up for Nico’s family has garnered over $240,000, reflecting the community's support in their time of grief.
