SHREVEPORT, La. — A man killed eight children, including seven of his own, and shot two women in a devastating attack in Shreveport, Louisiana, marking the nation’s deadliest shooting in over two years.
Local authorities expressed their shock during a news conference, with Mayor Tom Arceneaux describing the incident as possibly the worst tragedy the city has ever faced.
Mourners gathered outside the residence where the shootings occurred, lighting candles and laying flowers in memory of the victims as they processed the tragedy.
This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had, Arceneaux stated, asking the community for patience and prayers.
The violence erupted early Sunday morning, starting with an assault at one location before moving to a second home where seven children lost their lives. One child was found dead on the roof, while another, who managed to escape, survived after being hospitalized.
The range of ages for the deceased children was between 3 to 11 years old—three boys and five girls, as reported by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office.
Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon confirmed that the shooter, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, died during the police pursuit that followed the incident. Authorities indicated that the shooting was confidently described as a domestic matter.
State Rep. Tammy Phelps stated that some children had attempted to escape through the back door while pleading for help during the chaotic incident.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Elkins was in the midst of a separation with his wife, and they were to appear in court regarding the matter, which allegedly fueled the violence that unfolded.
Community members are coming together to support one another during this horrific time, contemplating the fragility of life as they mourn the loss of innocent children.
