Montreal shooting leaves police officer, civilian and assailant dead
A midday gunfight in the bustling Côte‑des‑Neiges district turned tragic when an unknown male defaced an open window and fired several shots at first responders. The shooter, believed to have acted alone, was shot by police and died instantly. One Montreal police officer suffered serious injuries but is now reported stable. The woman killed in the attack was Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a respected member of the local Jewish community.
Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher described the incident as a nightmare, noting it was the first officer casualty in the city since 2001. The body of Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was recovered and the department affirmed that the flag shall fly at half‑staff in his memory.
Security officials point to a possible motive linked to the online incel movement, though the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have not yet confirmed any document fueling the gunman’s intent. The Quebec premier and federal prime minister have issued statements condemning the violence and expressing solidarity with the victims’ families. In response, a national alert warned citizens of an armed suspect, which was lifted later that afternoon when the threat was neutralised.
While there is no confirmation that this was an antisemitic attack, the incident has reignited discussion over how online radical communities may influence local violence. Canadian sources continue to investigate the attacker’s motives and background as details emerge.
