In a distressing event early on Saturday, seven wild Asian elephants, including some calves, were tragically killed after a high-speed train collided with them in Hojai district, Assam. Local officials reported that another calf sustained injuries from the incident.

The Northeast Frontier Railway stated that the train driver identified the herd attempting to cross the tracks and activated the emergency brakes; unfortunately, the collision still occurred.

The impact led to five carriages derailing, but there were no reported injuries among passengers or crew members on the Delhi-bound express train. This resulted in several train cancellations and diversions in the area throughout the day.

Following the unfortunate event, veterinarians examined the deceased elephants before they were buried. Assam, known for its substantial elephant population with nearly 6,000 registered elephants, often sees herds traversing railway tracks. However, the location of this particular incident was not recognized as an official elephant corridor, raising questions about wildlife protection measures.
