JACKSON, Miss. — In a shocking incident, the FBI has charged Stephen Spencer Pittman with arson after he admitted to deliberately setting fire to the Beth Israel Congregation because of its Jewish ties. An affidavit from the FBI reveals that Pittman made a confession stating he started the fire due to the synagogue's religious affiliation.

The fire occurred early Saturday morning, causing significant damage to the synagogue's library and administrative offices but fortunately did not injure any congregants or firefighters. Surveillance footage captured a masked individual pouring a flammable liquid in the lobby, escalating community fears of targeted hate crimes.

Pittman's actions have drawn comparisons to a dark era in Mississippi’s history when the Ku Klux Klan bombed the synagogue due to its support for civil rights. This historical context adds a layer of outrage to the current situation, as the community is left to grapple with the resurgence of such sentiments.

The congregation, home to several rich traditions, has vowed to rebuild. Zach Shemper, the synagogue president, expressed hope for support from neighboring churches during the rebuilding process, stating, “As Jackson’s only synagogue, Beth Israel is a beloved institution.”

In light of the attack, community members and leaders across Jackson are rallying in solidarity, emphasizing the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and safety in a time of rising antisemitism. The Jewish community of Jackson, which has faced challenges and prejudice, is determined to overcome this incident together.
