Spain has restricted its airspace to US military aircraft involved in operations targeting Iran, confirmed by Madrid's defense minister Margarita Robles. We will not authorize the use of Moron and Rota [military bases] for any acts related to the war in Iran, she declared, underlining that this stance has been communicated to the US government from the outset.

Foreign affairs minister José Manuel Albares clarified that the decision is intended to avoid actions that could lead to an escalation of the conflict. As the event unfolds, the US government has remained silent on Spain's decision, though previous remarks from President Donald Trump indicated a potential trade embargo against Spain due to its opposition to the ongoing war.

Since the conflict commenced in February, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has vocally opposed US and Israeli military actions against Iran, labeling them as both reckless and illegal. Earlier in March, he reiterated Spain's refusal to allow the use of its jointly-run military bases located at Rota and Morón for American operations.

In a previous address, Sánchez also announced that all flight plans connected to operations in Iran, including those for refueling aircraft, were rejected. He reinforced Spain's sovereignty by stating they do not wish to be complicit in illegal wars.

Following the airspace closure, US bombers involved in the Iran conflict are expected to operate from bases like RAF Fairford in the UK, necessitating longer flight routes that bypass Spain entirely.

Additionally, it was reported that Spanish airspace would only be navigable under emergency circumstances, in what experts deem a notable infringement on US military strategies in the region. The Iranian embassy in Spain noted their openness to consider requests from Madrid regarding safe passage through the vital Strait of Hormuz, stressing Spain's commitment to international law.

Amid rising oil prices and threats of attacks from Iran on US interests, these developments signify a complex geopolitical landscape that could alter alliances and strategies moving forward.
