President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Thursday's election and is set to extend his 40 years in power by another five years.

He received a substantial majority, according to the election commission, ahead of his nearest challenger, Bobi Wine, who has labeled the results as fake.

Wine has called on Ugandans to engage in non-violent protests.

Museveni, 81, first assumed power in 1986 as a rebel leader and has since won seven elections.

The election has been marred by violence, with Wine claiming that at least 21 people have been killed during the electoral process. The authorities have confirmed seven deaths.

Access to the internet has been restricted since Tuesday, complicating efforts to verify information. The government claims the blackout was necessary to prevent misinformation and violence, a decision condemned by the UN human rights office.

Wine has demanded that the internet be restored.
