NEW YORK (Flux Daily News) — New York City nurses have reignited contract talks with Mount Sinai hospitals after their strike entered the fifth day, highlighting their determination to advocate for improved working conditions.

The New York State Nurses Association announced on Friday that its negotiation team began discussions with hospital representatives at the three affected Mount Sinai locations following a call from a federal mediator.

This meeting followed last night's unsuccessful negotiation session with NewYork-Presbyterian, during which the union, representing roughly 15,000 nurses, expressed frustration over the lack of meaningful progress.

While discussions focused on staffing concerns, hospitals have labeled the union's proposals as 'unreasonable'. The union contends that their revised proposals were rejected outright with no counteroffer provided, despite extensive discussions that extended past midnight and included over 70 nurses who were allowed to observe the talks.

Currently, there are no immediate plans for additional negotiation sessions, as representatives from NewYork-Presbyterian reaffirmed their commitment to safe staffing ratios.

Meanwhile, negotiations with Montefiore, the third major hospital system impacted by the strike, have yet to recommence, despite the union's expectations of a Friday meeting, which the hospital has disputed.

Each healthcare provider is negotiating independently with the union, with reports confirming that operations have continued with the help of temporary nurses ensuring that emergency services remain operational.

Dr. Philip Ozuah, president of Montefiore Einstein, commended staff for their dedication during this challenging period, noting the importance of their efforts in delivering critical healthcare.
