A seven-month-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in her pushchair in broad daylight in New York City's borough of Brooklyn, police have said. Authorities believe the infant was the unintended victim of a suspected gang-related shooting.

Footage from the scene shows two men driving against the flow of traffic through the Williamsburg neighborhood when a man on the back of the motorbike opens fire, striking the child. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that the shooter fired at least two rounds.

Following the incident, the motorbike crashed, leading to the apprehension of the suspected shooter while a massive manhunt is underway for the driver.

A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant, lamented New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He highlighted the painful reminder of the ongoing struggle against gun violence in the city.

Witnesses reported chaos at the scene, with several adults and children present, including another infant in a buggy. The baby's parents sought refuge in a nearby shop only to later discover their baby had been shot. Witness Bernius Maldonado described the frantic moments as the mother screamed upon realizing her child was bleeding from the head.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the child was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported from the incident.

Commissioner Tisch expressed her empathy as a mother, conveying the unspeakable grief the child's family must now face.
