Estonia has reported that a NATO fighter jet, specifically a Romanian F-16, shot down a drone believed to have strayed from Ukrainian control over its airspace. The drone, suspected to have been affected by Russian electronic jamming, fell into a marshy area with no reported damage.

Ukraine expressed regret over the incident, alleging that Russia was tampering with their drones intended for military targets. This incident comes amid a series of drone incursions that have heightened tensions between the Baltic states and Russia.

The drone was tracked by Estonian air defenses, which were alerted by Latvia prior to its downing shortly after noon. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur reiterated Estonia's position against allowing unauthorized use of its airspace.

This increasingly hostile context is compounded by Russia's accusations against the Baltic states for enabling Ukraine to carry out attacks from their territories, claims that have been firmly denied by Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

The geopolitical atmosphere in the region remains fraught, especially as NATO takes measures to bolster forces in response to perceived Russian threats.
